Gender-based violence is everywhere, and, in today’s digital age across online platforms as well. The negative impact of gender based violence is felt more during crises. This gets further compounded for persons living with disability, LGBTQIA+ and minorities among others.

Ending all forms of gender- based violence and harmful practices against women and girls is a core mission for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). UNFPA India, in association with India’s biggest technology community, TechGig, launched the Hackathon: Crack the Code to Prevent and Address GBV in September this year. It invited diverse stakeholders to share their ideas and solutions. The participants submitted ideas that have potential to solve three key challenges:

  1. Improving GBV prevention and response for persons with disabilities;
  2. Addressing technology facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) and;
  3. Strengthening GBV services and support systems during humanitarian crises

This hackathon progressed in three stages: first – idea submissions, second – shortlisting and prototype submissions and third – final presentations with announcement of winners. More than 8,500 participants registered for the hackathon and around 250 ideas were submitted from 20 countries. Post evaluation by UNFPA along with their knowledge partners United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) India, Centre for Communication Governance at National Law University, Centre for Inclusive Policy, Centre for Internet and Society, ADRA, Rising Flames, Sama Resource Group, Bedroc and Amazon Web Services (AWS) on parameters of novelty, scalability, impact and diversity, only seven teams made it to the final round.

Seven finalists – Nettwork, Stemlabs Nigeria, Aari, Social Animals, Aurovi, EVOL and Czeyon – presented their solutions and working prototypes to the jury in December 2022. Winners were announced in an online grand finale event hosted at the TechGig Facebook and YouTube pages. The hackathon created a buzz with #EndGBVforAll hashtag across webinars, video and articles and social media platforms.

One winner and two runners-up were declared during the event. The winner took home INR 1.5 Lakh as the prize amount while the first and second runners-up received INR 1 Lakh and INR 50,000 respectively.

Speaking at the event, Andrea M Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative and Country Director Bhutan, said “We at UNFPA recognise that innovation is essential to deliver at scale and to achieve the pace needed to realize gender equality, equity and reproductive autonomy. Innovation and digitalization, is, without a doubt, one of the megatrends that generates explicit benefits for societies and economies, and one that should not be stopped or obstructed, but instead leveraged to maximize positive impact and minimize any adverse ones.”

Congratulating the winners, Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TechGig said, “We take pride in hosting initiatives such as the UNFPA hackathon where the solutions have potential to directly impact the society and aid the GBV survivors in accessing resources and right-based services. This is the best use case of technology and its fusion with social issues that resonate with the ethos of TechGig to make technology accessible to all. Congratulations to all winners!”

Expressing her happiness at winning the top laurel the event, Prachi MIttal said, “I have been working as an engineer and researcher for more than a decade but this is the first time that I feel my work will make a difference to the society at large. I’m excited to build this at a bigger scale, which wouldn’t have been possible without this opportunity given by UNFPA.”

National, October 3, 2022: About 80% Indian women technologists spent their COVID-19 lockdown time in upskilling, found a new recent survey by TechGig – the county’s largest technology community. TechGig’s survey with 1,283 women techies was conducted to understand the skilling trends in this workgroup. Among those who upskilled, most learned Cloud skills (43%), followed by Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (35%), IoT (12%) and other technologies such as Robotics (10%).

These stats outline a healthy trend that Indian women techies are keen on learning new-age technologies to remain relevant in workplaces. Technology is an evolving domain that has witnessed the most transformations in the last decade; and thus the concentrated efforts of tech workplaces, and industry at large, to promote upskilling among professionals. Here, industry-renowned talent benchmarking and recognition platforms like TechGig Geek Goddess play a pivotal role in bringing women technologists face-to-face with top technology companies. UNFPA-TechGig launch a nationwide hackathon – Crack the Code to Prevent and Address Gender-Based Violence – to create world free of violence https://www.tbsl.in/?p=3544 Tue, 20 Sep 2022 05:58:39 +0000 http://www.tbsl.in/?p=3544 Continue Reading]]> National, Sep 8, 2022: Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world. It knows no social, economic or national boundaries. Worldwide, an estimated 1 in 3 have women experienced physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime 1 . The most recent data from National Family Health Survey (NHFS-5) also reported that around 29.3% married Indian women between the ages of 18-49 years have faced domestic violence/or sexual violence.

The risk of and vulnerability to GBV increases on account of intersections of gender with sexual orientation, disability, caste, age. Similarly, GBV risks are known to increase during humanitarian crises such as public health emergencies, natural calamities and conflicts. Today, with the increased use and reliance on technology and digital spaces, we also see the emergence of newer forms of GBV where harm is perpetrated through online spaces. Clearly, GBV is all pervasive and addressing it in all its forms with a particular focus on those with increased vulnerabilities is no longer negotiable.

Leading a life free from violence is a fundamental human right – and one that is critical to
advance the realization of other human rights.

The imperative action to address and end GBV is of utmost importance to the Government of India with a focus on establishing One Stop Centres (OSCs) across states for those who are in distress and survivors of violence to avail counseling, medico-legal support and support from police all under one roof. To further strengthen these efforts, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) India – in association with India’s biggest technology community, TechGig -launched a Hackathon – Crack the Code to Prevent and Address Gender-Based Violence.
This hackathon aims to address key problems, knowledge gaps and increase access to services for persons with disabilities experiencing GBV; facilitating anonymous, safe and timely access to those at risk of GBV in humanitarian situations; and mitigating technology facilitated GBV.

The hackathon will crowdsource impactful and innovative ideas and turn them into prototypes for scaling up. The program has three phases: Phase 1- for relevant idea submissions, Phase 2 for selection and mentoring of ideas for prototyping and lastly, Phase 3 to announce the winners.

“Effectively responding to Gender-Based Violence requires convergence of great minds, innovative thinking and multi-sectoral partnerships. UNFPA is excited to launch its first hackathon in India to invite solutions to address GBV. The aim is to discover and deploy effective prevention and response mechanisms for newer forms of GBV, as well as recognize and respond to heightened risks and vulnerabilities among marginalized groups, including during crises” said Andrea Wojnar, Resident Representative, UNFPA India

This hackathon invites individuals, women-led teams, techpreneurs, civil societies, startups, research groups, and people with diverse lived experiences to submit ideas and solutions to make public spaces, workplaces, homes, and society equal, equitable and inclusive.

“TechGig is proud to partner with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in their crucial mission to #EndGBVForAll. I urge everyone to participate in this hackathon and share your innovative solutions – big and small – to make our world free of violence,” said Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TechGig.

Indian super coder overthrows world coding grandmaster at Code Gladiators 2022, claims the champion’s title & Rs 3 Lakh prize https://www.tbsl.in/?p=3541 Wed, 10 Aug 2022 10:29:11 +0000 http://www.tbsl.in/?p=3541 Continue Reading]]> Aug 10, 2022, New Delhi: It’s a narrative straight out of a Bollywood film script where two ex-champions fight it out for the winner’s crown and the Indian super coder edged out the world grandmaster to bring home the top coding title. The battle in question here was the finale of the world’s biggest coding competition – Code Gladiators 2022. IIT-Delhi’s Kalash Gupta (1st runner-up of Code Gladiators 2021) fought tooth and nail against the title’s defending champion Yury Pisarchyk and 3.3 Lakh other participants and won the title. With this, the UK-based ex-champion Yury occupied the 1st runner-up spot. Simply put, the winner and 1st runner-up of the 2021 edition exchanged their positions at the winner’s podium this year!

The 22-year-old, Delhi-based Kalash Gupta is not new to the coding circles. An avid programmer, this fresh graduate already has half a dozen coding titles under his belt. He participated in Code Gladiators 2020 & 2021 editions too and reached up to the runners-up positions in these editions. “My victory this year means that I’m getting better at competitive coding,” said a jubilant Kalash Gupta.

Code Gladiators is an annual coding competition organised by India’s largest technology community – TechGig. Here, top coders compete to showcase their coding excellence to the tech industry and earn laurels and jobs with top companies. This year, Code Gladiators celebrated its ninth edition with 3.3 Lakh registrations, which is a 6% Y-o-Y increase in participation. The most significant jump was noted for the registrations of women coders which noted a 65% increase in 2021 v/s 2022. Precisely put, about 95-Thousand women coders registered at Code Gladiators 2022!

This year’s edition saw over 2-Thousand international coders from 86 countries at the competition. The top five countries for participation were Canada, Australia, Austria, the UAE and the US. In fact, 3 coders were from war-torn Ukraine as well. All the coders fought the coding battle for 125 days and 18 winners took home Rs 50 Lakh at the grand finale event.

This year’s Code Gladiators hosted one open codeathon and 4 theme hackathons, namely: HP Machine Learning, NTT DATA AI Hackathon, KoreAI Intelligent Virtual Assistants, and Microsoft Azure Women’s Hackathon. Nineteen corporates and coding communities, and five tech bloggers partnered with this year’s edition. They included Oracle, PayFair, Hewlett Packard, NTT DATA, Kore AI, Microsoft Azure, Persistent, Colruyt Group, RenewBuy, Providence, Publicis Sapient, AllState, All Scripts, and IG Group.

Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TechGig thanked all these partners and applauded the winners. “TechGig’s vision to bring the best coders on one podium to encourage coding innovation has always found enthusiastic support from technology companies. At a time when veterans talk about the scarcity of tech talent – especially in niche technologies – Code Gladiators hosted 4 theme hackathons with over 40-Thousand participation in technologies such as AI, ML, Cloud etc. We had 95-Thousand women coders registering for this competition, again defying the notion that female tech talent is tough to find. This makes me believe that Code Gladiators is the no #1 platform for the developers, by the developers.”

This year’s edition was a total hit on the digital and social landscape too with a total of 11.2 Million impressions. Its social media hashtag #ComeCodeConquer garnered over 628 social media posts from participants, ex-winners, tech leaders, corporate partners, tech bloggers actively posting about how #CodeGladiators brought together lakhs of coders with technology companies. As Rishabh Rathi, a participant and ex-winner stated, “Code Gladiators gave me an independent podium to showcase my tech skills and ideas to top leaders directly. This access to leaders is difficult to seek otherwise.”.

As for the champion, Kalash Gupta, he still feels that there is a lot to do for him in competitive coding. Fresh out of IIT, he has taken up a job where coding is one of the ‘many things that he will be required to do’. Here’s wishing him and the other winners all the best.

The winners include:
Champion: Kalash Gupta
1st Runner up: Yury Pisarchyk
2nd Runner up: Yash Shah
3rd Runner up: Piyush Garg
4th Runner up: Naitik Varshney
Code Diva Award: Aanshi Bansal

More winners were announced for the four theme hackathons. All winners’ details are available at https://bit.ly/3QBA3ES

55% India Inc. companies struggle to find skilled LGBTQ+ developers: TechGig study https://www.tbsl.in/?p=3528 Sat, 11 Jun 2022 05:09:17 +0000 http://www.tbsl.in/?p=3528 Continue Reading]]> National, June 10, 2022: About 55% India Inc. recruiters struggle to find skilled developers from the LGBTQ+ work group and the attrition rate among this group is higher when compared to their male and female counterparts. Both these statistics indicate that the basic indices have moved when it comes to the career progression of queer developers at Indian tech workplaces.

India’s biggest community of 4.2 million software developers – TechGig – studied the hiring and employee engagement patterns for LGBTQ+ developers at tech companies. TechGig surveyed 568 tech recruiters from India Inc. firms for the ‘Gender Diversity Survey 2022’. Among the respondents, most (69%) were working in the IT/Telecom sector.

Here are the key findings of this survey:

    • Highest attrition among developers from the Rainbow groupThe TechGig survey asked about the attrition trends among the LGBTQ+ developers v/s the job drop-out among other genders. Most (41%) respondents said that attrition is higher among the LGBTQ+ developers as compared to the male and female programmers. About 33% respondents found no difference in the attrition levels based on genders, and the remaining 26% said that more men and women developers tend to leave jobs more often than the LGBTQ+ developers.

    • 77% tech firms go out of way to retain LGBTQ+ developers
The survey further probed if the tech companies were putting in extra efforts to retain developers from the queer group, and the unanimous answer was ‘yes’ with 77% votes. Only 23% respondents answered ‘no’ to this question.

    • Most firms offer company-sponsored upskilling opportunities to retain queer talent
When asked about the popular measures to retain developers from the LGBTQ+ group, company-sponsored upskilling opportunities (49% votes) emerged as the most popular offering by companies. Other popular retention tools were offering career growth chances (35% votes) and financial aid for wellbeing (16% votes).

    • Job sites preferred medium to hire LGBTQ+ developers; provide concrete employment data points v/s pride communities
Despite the availability of a plethora of LGBTQ+ communities, recruiters still prefer job sites for hiring queer developers. The survey asked about the popular mediums to hire queer developers, and most (52% respondents) said that they turn to regular job boards and sites to hire LGBTQ+ developers. About 19% respondents said they scouted pride communities, and an equal fraction of respondents said that they ask for referrals when hiring LGBTQ+ developers. The rest 10% respondents said they launched special advertisements for hiring these developers.
When asked why recruiters prefer job boards over pride communities, most (48%) respondents said that job sites provide detailed employment and skill-related data that other channels lack. About 32% respondents said that job boards provided credible candidates v/s other mediums.

    • 55% tech firms have active Rainbow groups, most groups offer emotional support as top priority
The TechGig survey inquired about how active their firm’s queer support groups were, and most (55%) defined their groups as ‘very active, holding meetings and proceedings regularly’. About 35% said that their pride groups were inactive. The rest, 10% said that pride groups at their firm were moderately active, holding meetings and proceedings periodically.
